Fresh Start Finance Program

No Credit Isn't Bad Credit. It's a Starting Point.

Never had a car loan? A short credit file isn't a bad one. It means a lender looks harder at what you can show, and our Auburn finance office can help you pull that together.

A short credit history isn't a bad one

Bad credit is a history with trouble in it: payments that came late, accounts in collections, a repossession. A thin file is a history that's barely started, maybe one credit card or a student loan, or nothing at all if you've always paid cash or just moved to Washington. Nothing in it counts against you. There's simply less for a lender to read.

That's why a lender leans on the rest of your application. According to the CFPB, lenders compare your income with your existing debt and look at the loan amount and term, your down payment and the choice of a new or pre-owned vehicle, along with whatever credit history you do have.

Six steps to a first car loan in Auburn

  1. Look over your credit reportsEven a brief file can hold an error. The FTC notes your reports are free every week at AnnualCreditReport.com.
  2. Get an insurance quoteWashington requires liability coverage on any car you drive, and on a financed one, most lenders want collision and comprehensive as well (OIC). Quote the exact vehicle before you commit.
  3. Say it's your first carUse the quiz by the headline or phone (253) 833-2465. Our finance office explains what lenders tend to want from a first-time buyer.
  4. Pull your papers togetherIncome, address and license. The complete list sits near the bottom of this page.
  5. We submit your applicationWith your permission, our finance office sends it out to lenders open to buyers with no credit history. Each one decides whether to approve and sets its own terms.
  6. Shop inside your budgetIf a lender approves, choose a vehicle within what it allows. Used vehicles under $20,000 and Hyundai Certified Pre-Owned are both worth a look.

Lenders, not the dealership, decide on credit. Approval isn't guaranteed.

What strengthens a first-time application

  • Income on paper: pay stubs, benefit award letters, or 1099s and tax returns from self-employment. Part-time wages and benefit income can't be marked down for where they come from (Regulation B); the lender still picks how much counts.
  • A steady stretch at one job and one address
  • Money down or a vehicle to trade. A larger down payment leaves a smaller loan (CFPB).
  • A co-signer whose credit is established, if you have one. Per the FTC, that person shares responsibility for the contract equally with you, so talk it through first.
  • A price that leaves room for the payment, insurance and fuel together

Terms you'll run into

TermWhat it means
Credit reportYour record of borrowing and bill paying, kept by Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Each one is free weekly through AnnualCreditReport.com.
Thin fileA credit report with only a little history on it so far. It isn't the same thing as bad credit.
Hard inquiryWhat happens when a lender pulls your credit for an application. Auto loan checks bunched into a single 14 to 45 day stretch are generally scored as one (CFPB).
Co-signerA second signer with established credit who shares full responsibility for the loan (FTC).
Out-the-door priceThe vehicle's price with taxes and fees included. Ask for it in writing so you can compare line by line.

Excerpts from 5-star Google reviews, quoted as written. Every buyer's credit is different, and lenders make every credit decision.

Where your first car loan shows up

It does if your lender shares payment data with the credit bureaus, and from then on your payment record on the loan, prompt or late, becomes part of your credit history. Ask our finance office which lenders report. Then set the loan up to be easy to pay: automatic payments from the account your paycheck lands in, with a due date a few days after payday.

Budget for the whole cost of owning it

The loan payment is one line in a longer list that includes insurance, registration and tabs, fuel, tires and upkeep. A longer loan can lower each payment yet raise the total you pay, the FTC warns, so weigh the out-the-door price, not just the monthly figure. Every used vehicle sold at Bud Clary Auburn Hyundai includes oil changes and tire rotations, two of each, free (an electric car gets the two rotations only). Each has passed a 137-point inspection and comes with its CARFAX report at no charge, 3 days or 300 miles in which to exchange it, and limited warranty coverage of 3 months or 3,000 miles.

Frequently asked questions

Can a first-time buyer with no credit get a car loan?

Yes, you can apply. A short record shifts a lender's attention to your pay, how long you've stayed at your job and your address, the cash you put down and whether someone will co-sign. Approval isn't guaranteed; it's the lender's decision.

Which do lenders see as worse: no credit or bad credit?

Neither is better by rule. Bad credit is a record of problems, and no credit is a record that's barely begun, so lenders read them differently and each draws its own lines.

Is a co-signer required on a first car loan?

Not to apply. Some buyers with a short or weak record may need one, the FTC says, and a co-signer has to pay if you don't, so ask only someone who understands that.

How much car can I afford as a first-time buyer?

Add up the full monthly cost: the payment, insurance, fuel, upkeep and registration. Get the out-the-door price in writing, and remember that a longer loan lowers the payment but usually raises the total.

Do I need insurance before I drive my first car home?

Plan on it. Washington requires liability coverage on any car you drive, and most lenders require collision and comprehensive on a financed vehicle. Get a quote on the specific vehicle before you sign.

Will a credit check for my first loan lower my score?

An inquiry can trim a score slightly, if you have a score yet. Per the CFPB, several auto loan pulls landing in one 14 to 45 day period are generally treated as one, so compare lenders over a few weeks, not a few months.
